![]() ![]() By allowing him to "take you fishing" you will likely never miss out on a productive charter. By following your guides lead you are giving him all the "tools" of his trade. You make a very important point Dwight.to always "go with your guides suggestions and recommendations".you are absolutely correct. Hey Dwight-Thanks for your outstanding review and especially for naming our Captain Ryan Carter as your guide. Maybe the fish God’s will be a bit more generous but you can always count on a good time with Key West Pro Guides! Overall you guys made the most of the day, had fun and enjoyed time spent together…that has to be a “win-win”…we certainly invite you to return and head out with us again in the future friends. ![]() I think you were witnessing Captain Grant pulling out all the stops on a less than stellar action day looking to ensure some fish in the boat and some hard fighting fish from the deep on your lines. Typically we approach our charters as "hands on fishing" for the ually we refrain from getting into the hooking of fish ourselves unless requested to of course. Averaging 180’ depths can make detecting the strike quite difficult for some lesser experienced anglers certainly. Striving for success I am positive Grant felt the need to get the hook in some fish for you guys and by setting the hook himself before handing the rod off to someone.I can see his thinking for the moment as understandable, especially if the action was slow and some fish were being missed? At this time you were fishing much deeper water depths targeting Mutton Snapper. Having someone like yourself with experience capable of handling hard fighting fish on light tackle standing on one side of a guide verses someone possibly unfamiliar with the techniques of saltwater angling standing on the opposite side puts any captain in a difficult situation. As for "hooking the fish" then handing the rod off.with a large group aboard (your party numbered 6 in total) usually the experience level of the anglers runs from one extreme to the other across the spectrum. Getting some fish in the boat for you guys was clearly important to Grant of course. It appears the action did pick up albeit not greatly, but none the less better than earlier in your day. With Mangrove Snapper spawning on the reef and the Yellow Tail bite being very good of late along with the Grouper action typical of late July this is the move of a seasoned guide.no question. Clearly the idea was to get you on some fish and in the action. ![]() When the weed lines break apart this scatters the fish over a much larger area of ocean and in turn the fishing becomes more "hit or miss".in fairness to Captain Grant it sounds like you guys gave the Dolphin a good shot, covered a lot of water but not really finding the action I agree with his move to the reef & wrecks. This allows the weed lines to break up and become more "patch weeds" rather than longer well formed "weed lines" more typical of our summer months. Dolphin are not always found in the morning where you left them the evening before! The offshore action for a recent period was difficult for all of us in Key West, during the time frame of your visit the Gulf Stream was running approximately 30 miles to the south of our island. Like all pelagic (nomads) species however they are constantly on the move searching for forage, suitable water temperatures and conditions, etc. Going after Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) I recall was your preferred target species offshore and typically is a good game plan in July as these are our "bread & butter" sport fish during the summer months here in Key West. Captain Grant always works hard to provide his anglers with a productive, enjoyable trip with fun as the theme. Sounds like the fish could have been a bit more cooperative however. We are pleased your group enjoyed their time on the water, that is always our number one objective. Hey T-Thanks for posting your kind review, we certainly appreciate it. Better yet.why not make it a father & son trip? Captain Dave is always ready to take you fishing! We appreciate the opportunity to have fished with the guys and welcome them back next season.
